Malia, Crete

Malia Resort in Crete, Greece

Malia is a small, beautiful little town which associates with the word 'holidays'.

The structure of the area has been made from the most blue sea and sunny beaches, little islands and a properous valley, which starts from the base of mount Dikti (2148 meters high) and stretches all the way to the sea. The name Malia originates from the ancient word Omalia, which means flat land. In 1583 it was known as villa de maglia.

The prosperity of the area has been used by the locals since the age of King Sarpidon, son of Zeus and Europe, and is still used today. The locals in the Malia area produce top quality fruit and vegetables, ranging from potatoes, cucumbers, tomatoes, watermelons and honeydew melons. However they are famed for their homegrown, best quality in the world olives and olive oil, and it is the only area in Europe which produces bananas.

Malia is the ideal area to stay because it is in the centre of the island and it splits the distance of the most iconic landmarks and historical places of interset to visit.

During the summer months (May - October), it is an extremely popular tourist destination which combines the modern with the traditional lifestyle. This is divided by the central main road which runs through Malia town. South of the road you will find the old village with its idyllic and traditional little streets and tavernas playing Greek and Cretan music (often live) where you can enjoy top quality Cretan and Greek food and the famous Cretan meze, accompanied with carafes of home made wine or raki. When walking here you can admire the old Churches and buildings, which date back to the Venetian period.

North of the road exists the new modern town where you can have fun in the unlimited bars, restaurants and clubs. At this end of the town you can enjoy the golden sunny beach and the clear blue waters.

The very mild Mediterranean climate which we have in Malia during the winter months (November-April) gives the chance for the visitor to have a different experience, enjoying the sun and the Cretan hospitality. There are numerous events which are organised by the local authorities such as Christmas, New Year, Halloween Street Carnival, Easter and much more, which are all an unforgetable experience.
